Hibbing Public Safety Center
The new Hibbing Public Safety Center is a centralized public safety facility that unifies Hibbing’s Police and Fire Departments into one combined building. It blends traditional design elements of red brick with contemporary design lines, creating a versatile space that facilitates interdepartmental communication and draws symbolic connections to the broader community.
Brunton Architects conducted a space needs assessment of each department’s existing facilities. Potential sites were then evaluated for the new joint-use space, and the existing Public Works building on East 23rd Street was ultimately selected. Upon completion, the all-new complex will be physically connected to the remaining Public Works structure via a three-hour rated fire wall, located along a newly established property line.
The 63,000 square-foot floor plan features dedicated administrative spaces, training rooms, and a shared fitness area. The police department facilities include a secure sally port, holding cells, and indoor squad vehicle parking. The fire department features 14 apparatus bays, a day room, bunk rooms, and extensive storage areas. The exterior features architectural precast panels with brick detailing that echo the character of Hibbing’s historic City Hall and high school buildings. Steel accents throughout the façade reference the city’s mining heritage, with elements designed to evoke the form and reach of a mining crane.
