four bears v. judy brugh community center | new town, nd
Chief Four Bears was a highly respected chief in the Mandan Tribe, and it is said he had the strength of four bears. The four distinctive architectural boxes that compose the exterior are symbolic of his protective hand and the four main Tribal characteristics: power, pride, protection, and community.
Filled with rich cultural and storytelling elements, the Four Bears Tribal Council wanted to create a welcoming intergenerational community center where youth could feel a sense of pride and connection to the Tribe, and Elders could tell the Nation’s stories and history by the fireplace. The gym was designed to be the heart of the 112,900 square-foot facility with basketball being a significant part of the community. The facility’s layout was carefully crafted to promote connection between community members with the track circulating in and around the gym, connecting to a variety of amenities: golf simulators, fitness room, aquatic facilities, movie theater, nutrition bar, commercial kitchen and other community spaces.
Materials were selected for durability and cultural significance, integrating the community center thoughtfully into the town’s master plan. Earth lodge inspiration was incorporated into the reception desk and nutrition bar with stick and post details. The floor is crafted with a starburst terrazzo pattern, depicting a part of Chief Four Bears’ robe. The interior design allows for the strategic placement of artwork serving as a canvas for local artists.
The project is currently under construction to be completed in 2026.
